What is a website subscription (and why paying every month can beat paying once)

There are two ways to have a website today. In the first, you pay once, get the finished site and are left alone with it. In the second, you pay every month and always have someone looking after it for you. The second one is called a website subscription, and it's what this article is about.

Almost everyone has the same doubt: it sounds too good, there must be a catch. Am I locked into a contract? Is the site really mine? Can I leave whenever I want? Let's answer that step by step, with real numbers and no small print.

What is a website subscription?

A website subscription is a custom-built website plus a team managing it every month, for a fixed monthly fee and with no tie-in contract.

Instead of ordering a site, paying one big invoice and then being on your own, you get the site and the work of keeping it alive inside a single monthly fee.
